Mount Burnett Observatory is an engaged and established part of the hills community. As such, we have been involved in many Public Events, but the biggest and most long standing has been the Belgrave Lantern Parade, a yearly event to celebrate the Winter Solstice and all our local organizations.

The Lantern Parade has been running for well over ten years, and for most of that time, MBO has been an integral part, not only of the parade but as a component of the after-parade activities. Every year we gather our members – many of them Young Observer families, and carry our lanterns proudly through the main street.  But we do more!

We have had a dedicated astronomy viewing site as part of the event, where our volunteers stay until late in the evening, showing visitors the night sky, and answering any number of astronomy related questions. The hugely popular viewing component enhances the evening for everyone.
