Guest Speaker: Jacquie Milner
TOPIC: The Laschamp Event.
In 2019 some earthworks in New Zealand unearthed the huge trunk of a kauri tree that had been buried in a swamp around 41,000 years ago. When scientists dated the tree, they couldn’t believe their luck – it had been alive during what is known as the Laschamp Event – the last time the magnetic poles of the Earth wandered away from what we know as “north” and “south.” This one tree has provided some startling insights into this turning point in the Earth’s recent history.
This talk will take a look at how long-lived trees record and store astronomical activity from the past in their rings and how they might help us prepare for the future.
Jacquie has been an amateur astronomer for 30 years and has been active in outreach activities for 25 years of that. She spent six years under the dome at the Scitech Planetarium in Perth, and 17 years as a volunteer night-tour guide at Perth Observatory. Jacquie moved to Melbourne in 2014 and joined the Mount Burnett Observatory where she has been an active committee member for the last ten years, helping to maintain the Dobsonian telescopes and creating the lanterns for the Belgrave Lantern Parade. Jacquie is also a regular with the outreach team and the Young Observers group. Away from MBO she has a personal interest in recording lunar and asteroid occultations for the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand (RASNZ) Occultation Section, which she has been regularly observing and reporting for since 2012.
