The title The Square Kilometre Array Low Frequency Array: building the world’s most sensitive low frequency radio telescope in Western Australia.
Abstract: The SKA-Low radio telescope is Australia’s part of the international SKA Observatory mega-science project. SKA-Low promises to be a transformative radio telescope, and will address the most interesting and pressing problems in astrophysics. Construction of SKA-Low is well underway in Western Australia. In this talk I will give an overview of SKA-Low, the key science goals, and an updated on latest progress and (very) early outputs.
More about Randall
Randall is a radio astronomer with a background in computer science and electrical engineering. As a scientist with a technical background, Randall bridges the gap between the science and engineering communities and works on novel ways to use radio telescope instrumentation. He has worked as the Principal Engineer of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) radio telescope and was formerly the Director of the MWA. He has broad astrophysical interests ranging from dark matter through to the birth of the first stars and galaxies. Randall has technical expertise in radio telescope design, digital signal processing, high performance computing and radio engineering and has designed, commissioned and generated science from several radio telescope instruments and arrays.
In July 2024 Randall joined the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Organisation as a Senior Commissioning Scientist for SKA-Low.
The SKA will be the focus of his presentation.
