Eden White returns via Zoom to talk to us about ‘String Theory 55 Years On’.
Eden spent 50 years working in the Medical Device Industry in Australia and Asia Pacific region. He specialised in the implanting of surgical devices and was a full-time surgical device trainer.
His other life, the love of cosmology has grown throughout the years as has his knowledge on the subject. He is the author of Cosmic Corner, a cosmology publication that reaches out to a local and international audience to bring science and cosmology to everyone.
A regular contributor to the Mount Burnett Observatory Membership Night Guest speaker spot Eden joins us on the Friday the 20th of September to present ‘String Theory 55 years on.
We travel back in time from the epoch of time 13.72 billion years ago, small particles we call sub-atomic particles, formed the basis of everything in the universe along with the 4 forces of nature.
These particles and forces combined to build a framework of particles that make up protons, neutrons and electrons which combine into various elements that make the 118 elements we know of today. (Note some are man-made.)
In 1965 these particles were put together on a simple page called the Standard Model of Physics SMP, that explains how the fundamental particles interact with each other.
The Standard Model of physics explains three of the four fundamental forces that govern the universe – the strong force, the weak force and electromagnetic force and the force carriers that were responsible for the creation of our wonderful universe.
In the 1970’s came a competitor to the SMP called String Theory.
This theory now has survived for over 55 years and stands as the alternative to the Standard Model, although being unproven to date, the theory still challenges today’s orthodox knowledge even though we have never seen a string whatsoever.
