Hey Astro fans!

Are you looking for an astronomy fix, or perhaps a special present for someone astro-minded? Look no further!

We have designed our Night at the Observatory as an introduction to astronomy for members of the public who would like to see a working observatory. Our enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides will lead you through a tour of the telescopes and of the universe they observe.

Observatory nights will include viewing through the telescopes if the cloud permits. However, this being Melbourne, viewing can not be guaranteed.

You can check the latest Night at The Observatory dates and book tickets here

Nights at The Observatory cost $15 per adult, with $10 for concession card holders and children over 5 (children under 5 are free). All money raised goes towards the maintenance and preservation of the Observatory.

Please note, the weather policy has now changed. Sessions are only cancelled if conditions are dangerous.

If the fire danger forecast is severe or above, or a Total Fire Ban is declared, the sessions will be cancelled and you will be able to rebook for a later date. If you have any further questions, drop us a line.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I visit the Observatory?

Members of the public need to either book a place on one of our Public Viewing nights or make a group booking. We also run occasional open days for which you don’t need to book.

There is great demand to come look through the telescopes and we are constantly looking at ways to satisfy this demand without overloading our wonderful volunteers.

MBO membership is $50 and is cost effective if you think you will come back more than once. There is also no waiting list for membership.

Do you charge for parking?

Parking is free for members and visitors to our exclusive Outreach events. We do have limited space and parking is not suitable for buses and other large vehicles.
