Young Observers 2021

Young Observers

MBO runs a children’s program called Young Observers. It is split into two age groups, with the younger “Novae” group for children aged 5 to 8, and the “Supernovae” group for older children aged 9 to 15. The age limit is flexible, but children will be expected to be able to concentrate and behave in a mature manner to be able to join the Supernovae group.

Since the onset of covid we have split activities into observing based nights at the observatory, and an online Code Club. Both activities run on Saturdays with the latest dates in the website calendar.

Onsite activities include practical lessons on how to use a telescope. The younger group span time with craft and games whilst the older group go into a bit more depth, learning about the details of star charts so we can point the telescopes at faint objects, how stars work, and keep up with the latest news in the astronomy world.

If you want to go beyond what the majority of the group is doing, experienced help and support is available to encourage you in your endeavours.
